WHAT WE DO

Armchair Reupholstery Northern Ireland

The first step is always to talk to the customer to ascertain what it is that they want to achieve. We estimate the amount of work in man hours required to do the job and calculate the fabric that is needed.

The first step is always to talk to the customer to ascertain what it is that they want to achieve. We estimate the amount of work in man hours required to do the job and calculate the fabric that is needed. A thorough knowledge of design is helpful as one must take into account the type of fabric, it’s stretch and durability and the pattern repeat in order to accurately assess how much will be needed. Customers can provide the fabric themselves or we can help source the right one. At this point, finish is also discussed; items such as piping, sewn finish and decorative nails will be offered.

We can also strip, sand and finish show wood such as arms and legs if it is in reasonable condition. This can really update and refresh a sofa or chair. Then we look at the underlying structure of support such as webbing and springs and then the coverings which give the sofa its shape and comfort.  Taking the sofa back to its frame takes a lot of work but it will be clear from the outset which parts require replacement and which can be reused.

The necessary structural parts are removed with tack lifters, pliers and ripping chisels, all old staples and nails are also removed; this is all done by hand. With this blank canvas we can start rebuilding. Structural support such as webbing is replaced, springs tied down and new coverings such as foam, horsehair, felt and wadding used to create a comfortable seat, back and arms. Customer input is essential as traditional materials are naturally more expensive to procure and to fit whereas modern options such as foam may be just as good for the required look and structure but may be less expensive.

Once the layers of stuffings have been built up on the base, back and arms, a fire retardant layer is fixed in place. This is a fire safety standards requirement. Finally, the top fabric is fitted in place by hand. Each piece; seat, inside back, inside arms, outside arms, outside back and under-base panel are all fitted in turn and adjusted and smoothed by hand. Lastly comes the finishing touches such as piping and studding until we have a finished piece that our customer is satisfied with their armchair.
